Michigan Medicaid data affirms persistent disparities for African Americans in accessing follow-up care after an encounter for a mental health or substance use disorder concern, as compared to other races. SHAR will work directly with the Changing Lives and Staying Sober agency to leverage existing relationships and forums by engaging the networks of Detroit Wayne County Association of Substance Abuse Providers and the Wayne County Coalition Collaborative of Drug Free Coalitions to conduct the discovery and planning process to engage African American residents and local stakeholders across the City of Detroit and other parts of Wayne County to uncover the spectrum of barriers to accessing behavioral health follow-up care. The project will use Peer Support Specialists, individuals who have had experience with addiction, recovery, and faced the barriers to treatment and support, who are from the community and represent the target population.
