The proposed project aims to implement and evaluate a comprehensive training program for school providers, mental health specialists, school nurses, teachers, and support staff, in Northern Michigan schools. The Helping Educators Learn Pediatric Pain Assessment & Intervention Needs (HELP PAIN) training program offers instruction on pain assessment, and cognitive and behavioral strategies proven to be effective in managing pain in students. This project will measure training and implementation success, changes in school provider knowledge of CBT strategies for pain, as well as the use and impact of these strategies with students. The project will also test the feasibility of a replicable and sustainable training model. In year 1, the program will be refined with the help of community stakeholders and a toolkit for staff and students will be developed. In year 2, the program team will launch training with partner schools and evaluate outcomes by individual school districts.
