Behavioral Health Access Study

Across the state of Michigan and the nation, access to behavioral healthcare is a critical issue. Lack of access can result in unmet needs, delays in receiving care, and financial burdens. In order to gain a better understanding of gaps and barriers to treatment, the Michigan Health Endowment Fund contracted with Altarum to study access to behavioral healthcare in Michigan.

The final report documents methods and results of analyses to characterize current access to mental health and substance use disorder treatment in the state, describes barriers to care, and identifies potential strategies for increasing access. High-level study results are presented in four companion research briefs that summarize findings separately for the Medicare, Medicaid, privately-insured, and total Michigan populations.
