Behavioral Health Access Study
2025 Report
The third edition of this report — produced by Altarum in 2025 — examines behavioral health care access in Michigan through an analysis of surveys and the latest available claims data from 2022. Two previous versions examined data from 2016 and 2019 respectively, helping to create a longitudinal portrait of behavioral health access in our state over time.
Among the key findings: Michigan saw an increase in need for behavioral health care from 2019 to 2022, along with modest gains in the percentage of residents who were able to access that care.
The report builds on the analyses employed in previous studies and presents high-level results that summarize findings separately for the Medicare, Medicaid, privately insured, and total Michigan populations. In addition, this year’s summaries also include a one-pager focused on behavioral health access for young people.
