Healthy Kids U.P. aims to create a coordinated, seamless approach to pediatric obesity in the Upper Peninsula by providing all Upper Peninsula schools with the resources to change policy, infrastructure, and community culture around health, nutrition, and physical activity. Healthy Kids U.P. will implement the University of Michigan Project Health Schools program in 12 middle schools, form and/or support school wellness committees, and develop and distribute a comprehensive web-based map showing all nutrition, fitness, and health-related programs offered at each school in the Upper Peninsula.

This two-year pilot project will demonstrate integration of health and wellness into the school improvement planning process in 24 elementary and middle schools across the state. Spectrum Health Foundation aims to significantly reduce racial disparities in birth outcomes and improve maternal-child health among communities of color. Strong Beginnings is a partnership of agencies and community organizations and will offer enhanced rental and inter-conception services to high-risk pregnant women and infants up to 24 months of age. Community health workers will connect women to other services, provide case management services, and conduct home visits to offer social support, care coordination, education, and referrals to wrap-around services. A mental health coordinator will facilitate therapeutic support groups and provide crisis management and individual counseling.

To help address childhood obesity in Michigan, the Michigan Recreation and Parks Association (mParks) implemented Come Out & Play, a project that provided materials and support to local park and recreation agencies for health and fitness programs, with a special focus in counties ranked the lowest on health factor rankings. Using a curriculum that meets the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, this program engaged more than 1,400 youth in 21 local programs across the state. By the end of the project, youth participants had increased levels of daily physical activity by an average of 30% and showed measurable improvement in fitness levels. The mParks Come Out & Play model was adopted by MDHHS and rolled out to agencies statewide, ensuring that more Michiganders see and use parks as venues for physical activity.
