This project will address a significant need to develop social support for adults with dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) and their caregivers. There are fewer than 20 support groups nationally that provide community education to individuals with swallowing disorders and the project would look to establish the first one in Michigan. Through this pilot, Calvin University will develop a curriculum that addresses educational, psychosocial, physical, and cultural needs of those impacted by dysphagia. Once the pilot successfully demonstrates its impact, the University will partner with local rehabilitation organizations to provide the support group as an additional resource to families. There is also the opportunity for this program to partner with the dysphagia treatment center the Health Fund supported in a previous grant round with Grand Traverse Pavilions. Community members with dysphagia and their caregivers will participate in focus groups and share expertise on related topics during the implementation period.
