Keweenaw Bay Indian Community is seeking support for a food systems specialist for the Debweyendan Indigenous Gardens (DIGs) program to increase community engagement, define the food pathways within Baraga County, become more active in the national food sovereignty groups, and develop a long-term plan and commitments to sustaining the program. This position will have oversight of the operation of the DIGs, coordinate community food systems educational programs and public events, and complete a food systems assessment for KBIC. This position will also be responsible for the care and maintenance of the DIGs, including guiding volunteers and seasonal work crews. Funding will also support purchase of supplies for events and workshops, advertising, and other promotional materials. This proposal will be co-funded with Portage Health Foundation providing support for the position in year 1 (approved 3/3/22). Tribal leadership has committed to sustaining the position in year 3 and beyond.
