Community Health Pipeline: Youth Catalyst for Change
Michigan boasts the nation’s second most agriculturally diverse economy, yet one in seven residents experience food insecurity. Trails and waterways beckon with endless opportunities to explore and be active, but fewer than a quarter of Michigan children get an hour of physical activity each day. Michigan’s bounty is plentiful, but we don’t all have access to it—and that disparity contributes to poor health outcomes, especially for racial and ethnic minorities, people with lower incomes, and other marginalized groups.
Access to nutritious food and physical activity are linked to other social determinants, such as our built environment. These factors shape the environments in which we live, learn and grow, affecting what we eat and how we move with profound significance for our health. Recognizing these connections, the Nutrition and Healthy Lifestyles program takes a holistic approach that strengthens food systems, informs policy, and amplifies the power of communities to address their priorities. Across these strategies we fund projects that engage community leaders in decision-making and benefit the people most affected by a particular issue, ultimately leading to a healthier, more equitable Michigan for all.
The application period for our 2024 Nutrition & Healthy Lifestyles Initiative has closed. You can view the list of grants for prior rounds at left or read descriptions of projects funded in 2023 here.
